
his week we will be looking at barefoot and minimalist running when compared with normal running shoes. There has been an increase in the uptake of minimalist and barefoot running in recent years, in part due to a marketing push towards this footwear as a better option. However, the vast majority of research so far indicates a relatively insignificant difference between footwear. There is a lot more to this story, as running economy and injury prevention are multi-factorial issues. Most issues of ‘foot posture’ won’t result in injury as long as the loading is sensible, and differences in limb length, stride length etc. can all dictate which type of footwear is most appropriate for the individual. Until starker evidence is produced, it seems that basing your choice of footwear off of feel and personal preference is justifiable. Just note that all changes should be gradual, and if any aches or pains are occurring as a result of your running, speak with your physiotherapist!
