Holiday Eating Advice
Amitha Mather

Are you worried about overindulging and gaining weight over the holiday season?

Our in-house nutritionist, Amitha, has a few tips on how to survive the silly season.

1. My first tip: Have a good breakfast
Your mum was right, breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Eating a healthy breakfast sets the tone of the entire day. If you start your day with a pastry or leftover pie, you can trigger a relentless sweet tooth for the rest of the day. Don’t skip breakfast either, as that will ensure you have sweet cravings throughout the day, and you will be more likely to overeat. What’s your best bet? Start the day with something that has protein, healthy fats and carbohydrates to give you energy and keep you satisfied until your next meal.

2. My second tip: Don’t eat something just because it is a holiday food
Most people eat particular types of food such as pumpkin pie on Thanksgiving, and glasses of eggnog at Christmas because ‘that’s what we do during the holidays’. Do you really even like pumpkin pie or eggnog? or if you could have any treat, would you choose your favourite ice cream or hot cocoa instead? Just because it’s limited, doesn’t mean you have to eat it.

3. My third tip: Alternate your bubbly with sparkling water
On average most adults consume almost 100 calories a day from alcoholic beverages. Since avoiding alcoholic beverages altogether can be very hard to do during this time of the year, alternating between an alcoholic beverage and sparkling water can help you avoid putting on weight, plus, sparkling water keeps things festive (you can even drink it from a wine glass!), and as a bonus, you’ll avoid entering the hangover zone, a not so happy holiday tradition, but just remember that it is all about balance. Go out and have a good time, knowing that you eat well most of the time!
