Stretching Myths and Misconceptions - Stretching helps prevent muscle soreness

It's quite common for people to report muscle soreness after a training session because they didn't stretch afterwards. Unfortunately we can't decrease soreness by stretching. The process of muscle damage and metabolic stress that occurs particularly with resistance exercise and particularly if that exercise is unaccustomed is completely separate to the process of stretching and therefore stretching cannot influence the soreness that we experience afterwards. However there is some research that having a more thorough warmup prior to resistance exercise may reduce soreness, so post exercise soreness is a problem for you this might be a strategy you want to try implementing. Otherwise it's just about your load management and not doing too much new stuff too quickly.
