Concussions are a common occurrence in contact sports, motor vehicle accidents, as well as day to day accidents. Here are 6 important facts about concussion.

We are holding a FREE webinar on sports concussion on Thursday April 3rd where Sam and Jono will go over the basics of what a concussion is, what symptoms to watch for, and advice for assessment and optimal management. See the link below to join:

1. Over half of all concussions are not diagnosed, and therefore not properly managed. Many people do not realise they have been concussed, and therefore do not seek the proper care.
2. Only 10% of concussions are associated with a loss of consciousness, and this is one reason why people tend not to suspect that they have been concussed.
3. You don't have to be hit in the head to sustain a concussion. Heavy blows to the body can transmit force up into the head which can produce a strong enough mechanism to cause a concussion.
4. You don't need to be playing sport or be in a car accident to sustain a concussion. We see many instances of people who have slipped in the shower or fell over a curb and have ended up being concussed.
5. Graded aerobic exercise, rather than complete rest, is important for concussion recovery. This has been the biggest change in concussion management in recent times. Aerobic exercise, even if it brings on symptoms (provided they are not severe and settle quickly after cessation of exercise), can help speed up recovery.
6. Just like an injury, concussion requires proper rehabilitation. There are many different domains of concussion and these need to be individually assessed and treated as appropriate.
