Whilst many think of physiotherapy interventions being primarily effective for musculoskeletal conditions (muscle tears, joint sprains, spinal pain etc.), exercise therapy has been shown to be effective in the management of metabolic conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, high BMI, and mental health conditions such as depression and anxiety.
Whilst most individuals understand the importance of exercise in these conditions, going it alone and trying to self manage the physical activity side of one’s health can be difficult, and the outcomes of any program are likely to be far greater with structured supervision and direction. This is where a physiotherapist can help. The term “exercise is medicine” has been popularised in recent years, but is an importance concept. Like pharmacological medicine, exercise needs to be dose appropriately to be used to maximum effect. A physiotherapist can take an individual’s unique condition, in combination with their medical & exercise history, as well as lifestyle factors, and design & supervise the most appropriate physical activity regime.
Many international health insurance providers will cover physiotherapy for these conditions, so if you do have private health coverage, it is worth checking if you are eligible. Furthermore, many doctors are better understanding the benefits of physical activity and happy to prescribe physiotherapy for those in need of care. We have a close working relationship with Tokyo Medical and Surgical Clinic. If you don’t have a regular doctor in Tokyo consider seeing one of their team, who can work together with us to help you achieve your optimal health outcome.
