Stretching for flexibility in Tokyo

When most people think about improving their flexibility, stretching is usually the first thing that comes to mind. It seems obvious: if you want to get more flexible, you should stretch more.

But research suggests this isn’t the whole story. In fact, strength training through a full range of motion — especially exercises that focus on the eccentric phase (the lowering or lengthening part of a movement) — can be just as effective, if not more so, than stretching alone.

The best part? Strength training not only helps improve flexibility but also builds strength and resilience at the same time. For those of us who love to get the most out of our training time, this multitasking approach makes a lot of sense. So next time you’re working on your flexibility, don’t forget to include some well-rounded strength work too.
